Tamko Ridge Vent Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Tamko-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Riverside, and most installations run between $450 and $1,100 depending on roof length, existing ridge cap condition, and vent profile. A typical job is done in one visit, usually four to six hours from setup to cleanup. We carry Tamko 12-inch and 9-inch roll vents on the truck, along with the matching nails, end caps, and connectors, so if your existing ridge vent is cracked, lifting, or leaking, we can usually handle the swap the same day we look at it.

The way most Riverside homeowners discover this problem is not dramatic. You notice a dark stain spreading along the ceiling near the peak, or you catch a whiff of that stale, hot attic smell in the hallway even when the AC is running. Sometimes it is a ridge vent that has peeled up at the edges after a Santa Ana wind event and now catches rainwater. By the time it is visible from the ground, the vent has usually been failing for months. The good news is that ridge vent replacement is one of the cleaner, faster roof repairs we do, and the price is straightforward.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s ridge vent line breaks into two main product families. The first is the Tamko 9-inch roll vent, which comes in 20-foot rolls and is generally used on smaller single-family homes and detached garages where the attic venting requirement is lower. The second is the Tamko 12-inch roll vent, also in 20-foot rolls, designed for larger roof decks and steeper pitches where the home needs more net free area per linear foot. The difference matters because a 9-inch vent installed where a 12-inch vent was called for will leave the attic short on exhaust, and that heat and moisture has nowhere to go but into your decking and shingles. We have seen that exact mistake on homes in the Wood Streets area, where an original 12-inch vent had been swapped for a 9-inch during a previous repair because the smaller roll was what the last crew had on the truck.

If you are not sure which vent is on your roof, check the underside of the vent at the ridge opening. Tamko prints its name and the profile width on the vent material itself, though after a few Riverside summers the printing can fade. You can also measure the width of the vent from edge to edge across the ridge before it disappears under the cap shingles. If it measures roughly 9 inches across, it is the 9-inch profile. If it measures roughly 12 inches, it is the 12-inch profile. Greg Holloway and our crews always confirm this measurement before we load the truck, because the profile determines not just the vent itself but also the nail pattern, the end cap fit, and how much overhang the cap shingles need to keep wind-driven rain out. We install OEM Tamko vent wherever possible, and we will tell you before the job if the profile is discontinued or on backorder. We are an independent service provider, not a Tamko dealer or affiliate, which means the product recommendation is based on what fits your roof, not on what a manufacturer wants us to move. Beyond Tamko, we also stock GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed ridge vent profiles, so we have honest alternatives if a particular model line is no longer available.

Signs Your Tamko Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water staining at the ceiling peak. This usually means the cap shingles over the vent have cracked or blown off, letting water run directly under the vent’s edge. The stain shows up at the highest point of the ceiling because that is where the water enters first. It may not appear after every rain, which is why the problem lingers.
  • Vent edges lifting or curling. Riverside’s summer heat is hard on asphalt-based vent material. After enough 100-degree days, the edges of a Tamko vent can curl upward like a fried tortilla, especially on south-facing ridges with direct sun all afternoon. Once the edge lifts, wind gets underneath and starts peeling it further.
  • Granule loss or bare patches on cap shingles. The cap shingles that cover the vent take the brunt of the weather. When you see granules collecting in your gutters or bare asphalt showing on the ridge line, the cap shingles are near the end of their life, and the vent underneath is about to be exposed.
  • Attic temperature climbing in summer. If your second floor got noticeably hotter last August even though the AC was working, your ridge vent may be blocked, crushed, or incorrectly sized. A failed vent means stale, superheated air stays trapped in the attic instead of exhausting at the peak, and that heat pushes down into your living space all day.
  • Bird or rodent activity at the ridge. We get calls from the Canyon Crest area where homeowners hear scratching near the peak. A ridge vent with a missing or damaged end cap is an open doorway for starlings, squirrels, and roof rats. The fix is not pest control, it is a sealed, properly installed vent.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-story Riverside home with 30 to 50 linear feet of ridge, a Tamko ridge vent replacement typically runs $450 to $800. On a two-story home with longer ridge lines, multiple peaks, or a steep roof that requires extra safety setup, expect $750 to $1,100. The range is driven mostly by how much cap shingle needs to come off and go back on, and whether the decking at the ridge opening is still sound. We give you a written price before any work starts, and that price does not change at the curb. It includes the Tamko vent material, all nails and fasteners, new end caps, removal and disposal of the old vent, installation, and a written guarantee on the repair delivered before the crew leaves. If that repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That is the Kingswell Way, and it is not negotiable. When we inspect a failing ridge vent in Riverside, we also check the ridge decking and the top course of field shingles, because a vent rarely fails in isolation. If we find rot, we will show you a photo, explain what we found, and give you a separate line-item price before anything else gets done.

DIY or Call Us?

Ridge vent replacement is not a safe overnight DIY job for most homeowners. You are working at the highest point of the roof, often on a 6/12 pitch or steeper, and the job requires peeling back cap shingles, repositioning vent material so it lies flat and centered, and nailing it in without creating leak paths. One misaligned nail or one overlapped seam, and the first real rain puts water straight into your attic. Riverside roofs also face intense UV, which makes old cap shingles brittle, and working on brittle shingles in summer heat turns a small repair into cracked shingles all along the ridge. What you can safely check from the ground is whether the vent looks even and intact, whether cap shingles are missing or curled, and whether end caps are still in place. If anything looks off, call (562) 315-0297 and we will come look at it. We tell you the price before we touch your roof. That’s just how it should work.
