GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials across Riverside, with most underlayment replacement jobs running $600 – $1,800 depending on roof size and deck damage beneath. If your GAF underlayment has torn, wrinkled, or started leaking, we can usually get a crew out to assess it the same week and give you a written price before any work starts. Most Riverside homeowners discover the problem after a Santa Ana wind event, when a shingle lifts and shows the underlayment beneath has dried out and split along an old seam.
Underlayment is the water-shedding layer between your roof deck and your shingles or tile. In Riverside’s heat, GAF DeckArmor and FeltBuster underlayments face UV exposure during installation delays and thermal cycling for decades after. When that layer fails, the plywood deck underneath starts soaking up moisture, and that’s when a $600 repair becomes a $3,000 deck replacement.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
This page covers two GAF product families: synthetic underlayment (DeckArmor, FeltBuster) and roof deck repair where the plywood or OSB beneath has rotted or delaminated. If your home has GAF Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, or Camelot II shingles, the underlayment beneath them is almost certainly a GAF synthetic product installed at the same time. If you have GAF cap sheets over a low-slope section or GAF StormGuard leak barrier on the eaves and valleys, those fall under this repair umbrella too.
The compatibility gotcha we see often: GAF StormGuard has a specific asphalt-impregnated formulation that seals around fasteners differently than generic peel-and-stick membranes. Using a cheaper aftermarket ice-and-water shield under GAF shingles can void the GAF warranty, not because the product is bad, but because GAF’s system warranty requires their components from deck to shingle. We tell homeowners this upfront when they ask about aftermarket equivalents. Sometimes the generic product is fine for an older roof outside warranty. Other times, paying the OEM price protects a warranty worth thousands.
We’re an independent roofing company in Riverside, not a GAF dealer or affiliate. That means we’ll recommend the GAF part when it’s the right call and a quality equivalent when it isn’t. We also stock Owens Corning and CertainTeed components for mixed-system homes.

Signs Your GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on ceilings or exterior walls after rain. This usually means the underlayment has torn somewhere uphill from the stain, and water is traveling along the deck before finding a seam to drip through. Riverside doesn’t get much rain, but when it comes, the damage from a long dry season often shows up all at once.
- Shingles lifting or flapping at the edges. When underlayment loses its grip, the fasteners holding shingles start pulling through. The underlayment is still there, but it’s no longer providing the mechanical anchor the shingles need.
- Visible wrinkles or ridges under the shingle layer. This is a classic DeckArmor issue we see on Riverside homes where the underlayment was installed in summer heat and installed too tight. The material expands, buckles, and telegraphs through the shingles above it.
- Soft spots or springiness when walking on the roof. That’s not the underlayment. That’s the deck underneath. By the time you feel this, the plywood has absorbed enough moisture to delaminate, and the repair involves cutting out and replacing deck sections, not just re-papering.
- Granules in gutters combined with dark patches on the deck. Granules wash off aging shingles, collect at the roof edge, and grind into the underlayment over time. Once the underlayment’s top layer wears through, the asphalt-impregnated core starts degrading, particularly on south-facing Riverside roof slopes that get relentless summer sun.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Riverside, GAF underlayment replacement on a typical 1,500 – 2,500 square foot home runs $600 – $1,800. Deck repair adds labor and materials per sheet: $85 – $150 per 4×8 plywood sheet replaced, and most Riverside homes we open up need two to six sheets. Here’s what that looks like line by line:
| Scope | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Underlayment replacement, small section (under 500 sq ft) | $600 – $900 |
| Underlayment replacement, main roof section | $900 – $1,800 |
| Deck repair, per plywood sheet | $85 – $150 |
| StormGuard ice-and-water shield, per 100 sq ft | $90 – $140 |
| Fasteners, sealant, disposal | Included in price |
That range includes the GAF-approved underlayment or specified equivalent, all fasteners, sealant, removal and disposal of the old material, and re-fastening the shingles or tile above the repair. Every job gets a written price before any work starts. If the roof deck needs more repair than we can see from the surface, we’ll document it with photos, show you the damage, and give you a revised written price before proceeding. No change orders made at the door after the fact.
The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s not a verbal promise; it’s the written guarantee that leaves with every Riverside crew, before they pull out of your driveway.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your roof from the ground with a pair of binoculars. Look for lifted shingle edges, visible underlayment showing at the eaves, granule buildup, and any dark staining at the roof-to-wall intersections. What you should not do is peel back shingles to look at the deck. Once you break the seal between the shingle and the underlayment, you’ve created a new entry point for water, and most homeowners can’t get the shingle to lay flat again without the right adhesive and technique.
On a roof in Riverside, walking the slope to inspect the underlayment means working at height on a hot surface that can exceed 140 degrees in summer. Falls from residential roofs are a leading cause of serious injury among homeowners attempting their own repairs. If you’re not experienced with roof work, hire someone who is. If you’re not sure what you’re seeing, call us at (562) 315-0297 and we’ll send someone to take a look. The estimate is free.
FAQs
GAF DeckArmor and FeltBuster underlayments typically last 18 – 25 years in Riverside’s climate when properly installed, but south-facing slopes that take constant summer sun may degrade in 12 – 15 years. The underlayment often outlasts the shingles above it, which is why we inspect it whenever we’re up there for a re-roof. Give us a call at (562) 315-0297 and we’ll check yours.
Small tears and seam failures can sometimes be patched with the same GAF material, but once water has reached the deck underneath, the damaged plywood has to be cut out and replaced. The deciding factor is whether the deck is solid enough to hold fasteners and whether the underlayment around the damaged area is still bonded. We’ll show you photos either way before recommending a repair versus a replacement.
A typical underlayment replacement and a two-to-four-sheet deck repair takes one day from tear-off to re-fastening the roof covering. Larger jobs or repairs that expose more deck damage than expected can run two to three days. Riverside weather rarely stops work, but we plan around the day’s heat by starting the tear-off early and scheduling the underlayment installation for the cooler part of the afternoon. Call (562) 315-0297 to get on the schedule.
Yes. Our Riverside trucks carry GAF DeckArmor and FeltBuster in common widths, StormGuard for valley and eave repairs, and plywood deck sheeting for removal-and-replacement work. If your repair requires a specific GAF cap sheet or a specialty material, we order it and have it within a week. We also carry CertainTeed and Owens Corning equivalents for mixed-system homes and older roofs outside their original warranty period. We tell you the price before we touch your roof. That’s just how it should work.
